During a meeting a group of U.S. ambassadors at the White House Tuesday afternoon, President Trump allowed the media to enter the room and responded to questions about the group chat scandal that has cast a cloud over his administration this week.
According to Trump, a staffer for national security adviser Mike Waltz was responsible for mistakenly adding a liberal journalist, Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, to a group chat on Signal, as multiple Trump Cabinet members and top officials were discussing planned airstrikes against the Houthi terror group, which ultimately took place on March 15.
Prior to Goldberg publishing a report in The Atlantic on Monday, none of the officials had been aware that Goldberg had inadvertently been included in their group chat.
It has been speculated, although not yet confirmed, that Waltz’s deputy, Alex Wong, may have been the person who created the group chat and accidentally added Jeffrey Goldberg (JG) instead of Jamieson Greer (also JG), who serves as the U.S. Trade Representative.
Democrats are lashing out in condemnation and calling for resignations.
President Trump patiently responded to reporters’ questions during the meeting Tuesday, and noted that Waltz is a “very good man.”
Trump commended his national security team, saying, “We have an amazing group. Our national security now is stronger than it has ever been.”
“There was no classified information as I understand it,” Trump added. He then invited Waltz to comment on the incident.
Waltz said he has never met or communicated with Goldberg, and they are investigating as to how he got in the group chat.
“The lesson is, there’s a lot of journos in this city who have made big names for themselves making up lies about this president… We are looking into and reviewing how the heck he got into this room. But I’ll tell you what, the world owes @POTUS a favor. Under Biden, global shipping was shut down… President Trump took decisive action with his national security team, took out the head missiler… knocked out communications sites… thank God for American leadership again.”
Waltz also confirmed that their technical and legal experts are investigating the breech.
Trump explained that discussions like this are best done in the Situation Room, and acknowledged that it is best not to use Signal to communicate in case it is in an emergency.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) commented on the backlash, writing, “I agree with President @realDonaldTrump that @MikeWaltz47 is an invaluable member of his national security team and that he should continue to serve the President and our country.”

I’m guessing Waltz’ deputy, Alex Wong, who set up the group, is having a very bad day… pic.twitter.com/a7DmWlQuEV

Most likely, it was Waltz’s deputy, Alex Wong, who created the group chat and accidentally added Goldberg instead of Jamieson Greer (JG)
It was just a heads-up chat group for coordination among deputies and staff from different branches of Intel—hard to believe anything… pic.twitter.com/7tUZNB6Jo6
