From Axios: Tampa Mayor Jane Castor issued a dire warning to residents considering ignoring evacuation orders as Hurricane Milton approaches Florida.
Threat level: “I can say without any dramatization whatsoever: If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die,” Castor told CNN on Monday evening.
The big picture: Hurricane Milton explosively intensified to become a Category 5 storm on Monday.
Coming fast on the heels of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Milton threatens to impact highly populated areas of the Florida coast. The National Hurricane Center warned Tuesday that Hurricane Milton “has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”
“There’s never been one like this. Helene was a wakeup call. This is literally catastrophic,” Castor warned.
She added that if Tampa receives the predicted storm surge, “This is not survivable.”

The City of Tampa posted a map of the city on Saturday, and urged residents to be familiar with the evacuation zones. The zones are identified as follows:
- Red = Zone A
- Orange = Zone B
- Yellow = Zone C
- Green = Zone D
- Blue = Zone E
KNOW YOUR ZONE 🧠: Go ahead and look up your evacuation zone now so you know what to do if evacuation orders are issued. During times of high demand, the system may experience technical difficulties.
Note: this is not the same as a Flood Zone.

Tampa Police Chief Bercaw released a video warning people to evacuate. He said he was currently standing in an area that is in Zone A, and said if he were still there when the hurricane strikes, he would be under water.
You can replace material items, but you cannot replace a life. If you live in Zone A, Zone B, or a mobile home, please heed to the mandatory evacuation notice.

At least one man claims he’s going to ride it out in his 20-foot sailboat in the Tampa Bay. He claims God told him to get a boat, and he’s not leaving it.
I’ve been following this lieutenant Dan lore for a few weeks now and he is planning to face the Cat 5 hurricane Milton on his 20-foot sailboat in the Tampa Bay
I will be devastated if he doesn’t make it but I believe he has the heart to survive pic.twitter.com/sGVva8bc8O
