Abolished as it is, or a total remodel, but calling the department that oversees our children’s education by a different name? It will freak an absurd number of people out. It is a mess, without a doubt, as it is.
A classic definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing but to expect different results. The department of education has been a disaster ever since its creation. Test scores have gone down and the department has become a hotbed of woke, leftist propaganda and failed social agendas. It serves no useful purpose and should be eliminated or at the very least reduced to a clearing House for block grants that go to the states.
I’m old enough to remember when there was no DOE. I live in NY and our standards were high, with a Regents Exam required of all core courses before graduation. Other states, mostly southern, did not have the same standards and so it seemed like a national standard was necessary. Instead, everyone’s standards went down with the farce of dictates from DC. For instance, NY got rid of the Regents Exams, and now colleges don’t even require SATs. Some HS seniors graduated without reading or Math skills… why do we as a nation condone that? These are our people and we let them down. Only local schools can meet the needs of their students, but the other problem is parents… they must keep their children accountable…
I do agree that there need to be standards to be met. The rate of dumbing down curriculum is bad. Instead of keeping the bar high too many districts change the expectations to make their stats look good.
I’ve worked in the school system. The mandates that came down from that agency were over reach. The leftist view is pushed and the children suffer, while good, caring teachers are stifled with having to meet them. Get rid of it and let teachers teach!
Receiving educational directives from the federal gov’t via the DOE was never a good idea. One size does not fit all. The people at the local level have a much better idea of what the needs are for their students. Abolishing the DOE would allow for more flexibility and hopefully improve the quality of education in our schools. Top down directives smack of control and often are not what the locals want or need.

And they need to get rid of the teachers union or reform it. They have too much power over what our children learn. It should be up to the parents.

There is NO constitutional power/authority that exists granting this agency to exercise any authority with the 50 states.
