The Trump administration is facing criticism from Democrats when it was revealed that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared sensitive military plans for strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen via a Signal group chat, inadvertently including Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.

The leaked details, published by Goldberg, included operational specifics such as targets, weapons, and attack sequencing, raising serious national security concerns just hours before the U.S. launched airstrikes on March 15. The use of Signal, an encrypted but unclassified messaging app, for such discussions has been widely criticized as a breach of protocol, with experts noting it could violate security norms and potentially the Espionage Act.

Democrats have seized on the incident, accusing Hegseth of incompetence and endangering American lives, while the White House has confirmed the authenticity of the chat but downplayed its severity. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has led the charge, calling Hegseth “the most unqualified Secretary of Defense in American history” and demanding his immediate firing in a letter to President Trump. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, has also called for Hegseth’s resignation, alongside National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, stating, “When the stakes are this high, incompetence is not an option.” Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego have echoed this sentiment, with Kelly labeling Hegseth’s actions as potentially life-threatening to service members. Representative Jonathan Jackson of Illinois has demanded Hegseth step down, calling the leak a “gross dereliction of duty.”

While some Republicans have dismissed the incident as a minor error, the growing bipartisan pressure and public outrage suggest Hegseth’s position as Secretary of Defense may be untenable. We want to ask you, the reader: should Pete Hegseth resign as Secretary of DoD? Answer in our poll below and comment your thoughts on the calls for Hegseth to resign over Signalgate.
