FROM DAILY MAIL: The school district of a very liberal city has banned teachers from expressing their personal political opinions.
As students are set to return to school on Monday, teachers in San Francisco public schools have been told that they cannot discuss their political stance in the classroom.
School leaders reminded educators that they are not allowed to show their political opinions in any way – from what they say, to what they wear and how they decorate their classrooms.
Back-to-school training took place this week, and principals were encouraged by district officials to make their employees aware of this ban.
Teachers have never been allowed to discuss personal politics, but this rule has been ignored in recent years. Last year, district officials provided principals with materials to train staff on bias and personal opinions, but it’s unclear how many used them.
A veteran teacher said this is the first year she’s received such guidance. She believes many teachers have been misled about their professional freedoms and responsibilities. She also points out that K-12 teachers lack the same academic freedoms as university instructors and that their students are minors.
The guidance follows last year’s controversies surrounding political activism at schools, particularly in ethnic studies courses.
Days before the start of classes, San Francisco school leaders reminded teachers they can’t express political opinions during the school day, including in what they say, wear or put on their walls. https://t.co/x5JUizF6oc
