From ABC News: “General Hospital” star Anthony Geary has died, an ABC publicist confirmed to KABC. He was 78.

The soap opera star, who also went by Tony, is known for playing Luke Spencer on the hit ABC daytime drama.

Fans remember Geary’s Luke Spencer for being quirky, impulsive, brash and sassy, which made him one of daytime TV’s most iconic characters.

Geary’s longtime role as Luke Spencer began in 1978. He played the iconic soap opera character on TV until 2015.

The 1981 episode of General Hospital, in which Luke marries Laura Webber, (played by Genie Francis), was watched by 30 million live viewers and is still the highest-rated soap opera episode in American TV history.

The Luke and Laura romance story was so popular that the two actors were even featured on the cover of Newsweek in 1981, the year of the widely watched TV wedding.

Francis paid tribute to Geary in a post on X Monday.

“He spoiled me for leading men for the rest of my life. I am crushed, I will miss him terribly, but I was so lucky to be his partner. Somehow, somewhere, we are connected to each other because I felt him leave last night. Good night sweet prince, good night,” she wrote.

After retiring from General Hospital, Geary, who was gay, moved to Amsterdam with his partner, Claudio Gama, and the two men were married in 2019.

Variety reported that Geary died due to complications from a medical procedure, but did not say what the procedure was. He died in the Netherlands on Sunday.

Below is footage of the infamous wedding between General Hospital’s Luke and Laura, which aired on November 17, 1981.
