From Fox News: A pair of Senate Republicans are pushing their House counterparts to reject the Trump-backed shutdown deal unless it includes Homeland Security funding and election integrity legislation.
Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, are calling on House Republicans to push back against the Senate-passed funding package, which includes bills to fund five agencies, including the Pentagon, as a partial government shutdown continues.
They contended that the package needs to be retooled, and must include a modified version of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, dubbed the SAVE America Act, and the Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill, which was stripped out after Senate Democrats threatened to blow up the government funding process.
Doing so could extend what was expected to be a short-term shutdown.
“Last night, my friend @BasedMikeLee and I took a stand to STOP DEMOCRATS’ EARMARKS and PUT AMERICANS FIRST. Taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for Dems’ ridiculous pet projects,” Sen. Scott announced on Saturday.
In one example, he pointed to an immigrant rights organization in New York City that will be getting $500,000 to provide services to illegal aliens in the city.

“It’s time to fight for America. The Left will NEVER fund DHS & ICE. If House Republicans don’t put the DHS bill back in, add the SAVE America Act & remove the wasteful earmarks, Democrats win. We must protect our homeland, secure our elections & end the reckless spending NOW!” Scott urged.

“Why do we need to fund DHS and ICE? Three reasons: Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, Rachel Morin. All innocent women who were murdered by violent illegal aliens. We need to fully fund DHS & support ICE so this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN,” Scott added.

Sen. Lee wrote, “To my friends in the House GOP: Please put DHS funding back in. Then add the SAVE America Act.”

Lee blasted a Fox News headline suggesting he and Scott are committing an “act of rebellion.”
“So it’s an act of “rebellion” to suggest there should be Republican priorities added to a spending bill that (1) sets the Department of Homeland Security up to be defunded, (2) Senate Democrats had a large hand in writing, and (3) House Democrats are now refusing to support?” he asked.
Lee added:
Dems had already written way too much of this bill by the time it first passed in the House—and it shows (massive earmarks, funding for refugee resettlement, NED, USADF, etc.).
Then last week Schumer demanded that the DHS funding provision be replaced with a short, two-week extension (an extension Dems will use as leverage to demand restrictions on ICE and immigration enforcement broadly).
Schumer’s demand was granted with no corresponding win for Republicans, and the Senate passed the bill. After the bill passed in the Senate, Jeffries said basically “don’t count on Dems supporting it in the House”
Under these circumstances, why shouldn’t the recent Democrat wins on the bill—which are nothing short of staggering—be offset by corresponding wins for Republicans?
