From USA Today: President Joe Biden pardoned his brother James Biden and other relatives Monday for unspecified crimes, a similar last-minute move to protect his family from potential investigation as when he pardoned his son Hunter Biden for gun and tax convictions.
The president said he pardoned his brother and other relatives − James’s wife Sara Jones Biden, sister Valerie Biden Owens and her husband John Owens, and another brother, Francis Biden − because of concerns about “baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families,” he said in a statement released minutes before the end of his term.
House Republicans investigated James Biden as part of an impeachment inquiry against the president. House Republicans urged the Justice Department to charge James Biden criminally for making allegedly false statements to lawmakers.
“My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me—the worst kind of partisan politics. Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House, in the last moments of his presidency.
“I believe in the rule of law, and I am optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics. But baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families. Even when individuals have done nothing wrong and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage their reputations and finances,” Biden’s statement declares.
“That is why I am exercising my power under the Constitution to pardon [Biden’s brother] James B. Biden, [his wife] Sara Jones Biden, [Biden’s sister] Valerie Biden Owens, [her husband] John T. Owens, and [Biden’s brother] Francis W. Biden. The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” the statement concludes.
With just a few minutes left in his presidency, Joe Biden issues “a full and unconditional pardon” of his family.
