Local sheriffs voiced support for President-elect Trump’s mass deportation plan, stating public frustration with illegal immigration.

Republican Sheriffs Chuck Jenkins of Maryland and Richard Jones of Ohio told the Wall Street Journal they are ready to assist ICE in its efforts. Jenkins explained to the outlet that he was “willing to support” Trump “100 percent,” adding that he wants “to do more, within the law.”

When asked about supporting Trump’s mass deportation plan, Jones affirmed his support, stating, “So do the American people. People are tired of this.”

Trump plans to launch “the largest deportation effort in U.S. history” upon taking office, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirming operations to deport millions of illegal immigrants will begin immediately. Trump’s team plans a “historic” expansion of ICE’s 287(g) program, granting sheriffs and local agencies certain ICE powers. This includes reviving the controversial “task force model,” which allowed local officers to question and arrest suspected illegal immigrants for immigration violations during routine duties, a practice previously halted in 2012.

ICE’s website states:

The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 added Section 287(g) to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) — authorizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the authority to perform specified immigration officer functions under the agency’s direction and oversight.
