Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has been reducing political content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads before the 2024 election, favoring more celebrity gossip and animal videos.

The New York Times reports that Meta is distancing itself from political controversies as the election nears. Due to Meta’s deliberate adjustments, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads users have seen less political content in their feeds. The company also removed transparency tools journalists and researchers use to monitor political misinformation, making it harder to track false or misleading content.

Meta’s internal shift away from politics is clear. Zuckerberg reduced his involvement in election security and cut staff dedicated to election integrity. The election integrity team has been disbanded, and its members have been reassigned to other roles. Meta claims the changes are part of broader efforts to address election issues.

Additionally, the company no longer has a “war room” for elections; instead, it plans to operate an election operations center closer to November.

Zuckerberg recently declared he’s done apologizing for Meta’s censorship of conservatives. Reflecting on his career, he called a “20-year political miscalculation” his biggest mistake, saying he took too much responsibility for issues beyond Facebook’s control.

Despite claiming neutrality, Meta’s AI chatbot recently revealed bias, praising Kamala Harris for her “trailblazing leadership” while calling Donald Trump “lazy.”
