WOKE MADNESS: Chicago university student newspaper apologizes for correctly calling alleged killer an ‘illegal immigrant’

On Thursday of last week, 18-year-old university student Sheridan Gorman was shot in the head and killed while she was simply out for a walk with friends along the lakefront in Chicago. Her alleged killer has been identified as  Jose Medina-Medina, 25, an illegal alien released into the U.S. by the Biden administration.

Gorman, from New York, was a freshman at the Loyola University. But instead of voicing outrage over her murder, the Loyola student newspaper is apologizing for calling the alleged killer an “illegal immigrant.”

From the New York Post: Loyola University Chicago’s student newspaper is facing backlash for apologizing for its coverage of freshman Sheridan Gorman’s murder — because editors labeled the alleged murderer an “illegal immigrant.”

The Loyola Phoenix originally reported — accurately — on accused killer Jose Medina-Medina‘s status as an illegal alien after he was charged on Monday with the execution of 18-year-old Gorman.

“Immigrant man charged in murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved,” the student paper’s headline originally read, referring to Venezuelan national Medina-Medina, 25, as an “illegal immigrant.”

But the Phoenix later edited its story to describe Medina-Medina as a “Rogers Park Resident,” in reference to the Chicago neighborhood where Loyola’s main campus is located — and where Gorman was walking with friends when she was shot dead early Thursday.

The student-led newspaper then added the following jaw-dropping note at the end of their article:

Editor’s Note:

On March 23, a post on The Phoenix’s Instagram page carried the following headline: “Immigrant Man Charged in Murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS Involved.”

That headline didn’t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members.

Additionally, in the body of the original post, we described the man who was charged as an “illegal immigrant,” using language provided by the Department of Homeland Security. That language does not align with Associated Press style, nor does it align with the values of this newspaper.

No human’s existence is illegal, and we quickly changed our wording to reflect that.

We acknowledge the harm such language can cause and the power and importance of the words we choose to use. We deeply regret these errors, and we’re committed to continuing the high standards we hold for ourselves as journalists and members of the Loyola, Rogers Park and Chicago communities.

Additionally, Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker literally tried to blame the Trump administration for Gorman’s death, brazenly claiming, “I agree there have been real failures. Those failures, of course, extend beyond the borders of Illinois. They are national failures. A failure to have comprehensive immigration reform. A failure of the president to follow his own edict to go after the worst of the worst.”

The Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday, “Sheridan Gorman was failed by open-border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he carried out this heinous murder.

“On May 9, 2023, Medina-Medina was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol and released into the country under the Biden administration. He was released again on June 19, 2023, after being arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, Illinois.”
