From The Hill: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) on Tuesday signed the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of hair.
“Real freedom means being respected for who you are — no matter what you look like, where you come from, who you love, or who you pray to,” Shapiro said in a statement on the matter.
“For too long, many Pennsylvanians have faced discrimination simply for hairstyles that reflect their identity and culture — that ends today,” he added.
In 2022 alone, the Keystone State received 916 complaints related to racial discrimination involving hair texture and protective hairstyles, according to Shapiro’s office.
The report claims that Black people have been forced to cut their hair to retain employment or enrollment at local schools.
The Hill further states that the CROWN Act “will block employers from discriminating against employees or applicants on the basis of hairstyles such as locs, braids, twists, coils, Bantu knots, Afros and extensions, which are worn for various reasons including religious purposes and styling preferences.”
When the bill passed last week, Shapiro wrote in a post on X, “No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what you look like, you deserve the opportunity to succeed here in Pennsylvania. With the strong leadership of Speaker @RepMcClinton and @RepMayes, the General Assembly just passed The CROWN Act — prohibiting workplace discrimination on the basis of hair, hair texture, and hairstyle in our Commonwealth. We’re going to protect your freedom to be who you are.”

Shapiro signed the bill into law on Wednesday.
Adjoa Asamoah, a ‘racial equity champion’ who pushed for the bill, was previously the Biden-Harris Campaign National Advisor for Black Engagement. Speaking to the press, she gloated that this policy “is my brainchild” and said she has been pushing for the policy nationwide since 2018.

Social media users are weighing in on the bizarre new law.
“What is “hair racism”?” one stunned person asked.
Another wrote, “PA just made dreadlocks a protected class while the rest of us can’t afford eggs. Priorities, folks.”
Nick Roberts wrote, “While pennsylvania’s energy company, PECO is raising the rates on everybody on December 1 by 6%. Then it’s supposed to go up another 15% in the new year. Not to mention the hospitals that have closed down in multiple places in the PA area. But sure hair styles are our biggest issue concern right now.”
“Its hard to imagine it, but we used to be a serious country,” mocked Will Ford.
“Everyone can already wear their hair however they like in America,” another X user argued.
Corinne in TX painted a gruesome picture. She wrote, “They talk about hairstyles like dreads being discriminated against in the workplace, no, I’ve worked with plenty of people with dreads – dreads are not the issue. The issue is the people with the dreads that have 3 inches of dirt, twigs, leaves and burrito from last March smashed into the dreads because it’s never been washed in the four years they’ve had the dreads. But now these people will be protected from being told to wash their damn hair.”
