From KQEDTwo suspects have been arrested following an attack on San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security team on Thursday evening in the Tenderloin.

Video footage, first obtained by Mission Local, shows a physical confrontation between a man and one of Lurie’s security officers near Cedar and Polk streets around 6 p.m.

The mayor, who was unharmed in the event, is seen in the video briefly but moves away as one of his officers scuffles with one of the suspects and falls to the ground, leaving his head bleeding. No life-threatening injuries were reported and the security officer was treated at the scene.

Police arrested 44-year-old Tony Phillips and 33-year-old Abraham Simon.

Phillips was booked on attempted assault against an officer and other charges.

Simon was booked for obstructing an officer and for an active out-of-country warrant.

The mayor has been criticized for leaving his security detail behind to face the attack.

“San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie leaves his bodyguard to get beat up by the homeless, in the Tenderloin,” one X user wrote.

Another post read, “Video of the Democratic mayor of San Francisco is going viral after he calmly walked away while his security detail was being attacked.

“Mayor Daniel Lurie is seen watching his security officer struggle with a man, then turning and walking away as the officer is slammed to the ground, hits his head on the pavement, and is left bleeding.”

Another ranted, “@CollinRugg posted this about the San Francisco Mayor talking about how his city needs a reset, then 2 hours later, his security team is attacked. Sure. That’s interesting. But I’m more interested in what kind of man stands there watching his security guard get attacked and then just WALKS AWAY.

“At one point he’s standing there with his hands in his pockets, like he’s bored or annoyed. What. A. DOUCHE.”

They were referring to a post by Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, who wrote in an X post, “San Francisco mayor said his city needed ‘a reset’ just hours before his security detail was attacked in the Tenderloin neighborhood.Mayor Daniel Lurie’s vehicle was reportedly blocked by multiple men before at least one of his security officers was injured.

“‘There was an altercation this evening involving the mayor’s security detail. The mayor was not involved. We appreciate our SFPD officers for their quick response and for keeping our city safe every day,’ said press secretary Charles Lutvak.

“The incident came just hours after Lurie called for a “reset” of San Francisco’s government structure.”

Another post slammed California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie attacked while being driven through the Tenderloinm” the post said. “This post brought to you by Gavin Newsom, reminding you that even though he is once again out of the state, crime is down in California.”

A post by jj smith on Friday appeared to show a large police presence in the area near the altercation.

“After the Mayor security staff was involved in a altercation in this alley yesterday today they are having a major sweep and arresting multiple individuals,” Smith wrote in an X post.
