President Donald Trump will be delivering an address to a Joint Session of Congress Tuesday evening, March 4, at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Trump’s speech will not officially be called a State of the Union address, as that typically is done during the second, third and fourth year of a presidency.  However, it is being conducted in the same manner.

House Speaker Mike Johnson sent a letter on January 25, inviting the president to deliver the speech, “to share your America First vision for our legislative future.”

Democrats Invite Fired Federal Workers to Trump’s Congressional Address
From the New York Times: Rather than boycott President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, some Democratic lawmakers are inviting former federal workers to the speech on Tuesday as a way to protest the mass firings and funding cuts that have defined Mr. Trump’s first month back in office.

Federal workers’ treatment by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has energized constituents across the country in recent weeks, with many overloading lawmakers’ phone lines and showing up at town halls to voice their displeasure.

“What the Democrats are showing with our guests is that it’s the American people who are being hurt by the actions of Elon Musk and Donald Trump,” said Representative Brad Schneider, Democrat of Illinois. Mr. Schneider said he chose not to skip the address — other Democrats such as Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut have said they won’t attend — so that the president “didn’t get a free pass” and would see the effects his administration has had on people.

President Trump’s speech will be followed by responses from opposing parties.

Rebuttal from the Democrat Party: Sen. Elissa Slotkin will deliver Democrats’ response to Trump’s joint address
From NBC News: The opposing party typically selects an up-and-coming politician to rebut high-profile presidential speeches before Congress. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., announced the decision Thursday, with Schumer saying in a statement that Slotkin was “nothing short of a rising star in our party.”

“She will offer a bold vision of hope, unity, and a brighter future for everyone, not just the wealthy few at the top,” he said in a statement.

Jeffries said in a statement that Slotkin would “communicate that Democrats are fighting to lower the cost of living and protect Social Security and Medicaid while Republicans cut taxes for their billionaire donors and Elon Musk.”

Rebuttal from the Working Families Party: Longtime Kamala Harris mentee, friend tapped to respond to Trump’s congressional address
From Fox News: A left-wing political party tapped Democratic California Rep. Lateefah Simon, a longtime friend and mentee of former Vice President Kamala Harris, to deliver its response to President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday.

“I’m honored to speak on behalf of the Working Families Party,” Simon said in a statement last week. “We need a government that is run by and for working people, not billionaires—and that’s what the WFP is fighting for. When I see what’s happening in our country right now, it’s essential that we—as Members of Congress—are showing up for our communities and reminding people that it doesn’t have to be this way.”

The Working Families Party, which is a small left-wing political party, has featured Rep. Ayanna Pressley, former Rep. Jamaal Bowman, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib to deliver its response to a president’s joint address to Congress in previous years. Simon is a freshman congresswoman representing California who has shared a long friendship with former 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
