WHAM! Trump slams Sen. Chuck Grassley over tradition blocking Alina Habba’s nomination

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa was just torched by President Donald Trump in a Truth Social post Sunday night, over a permitted procedure that is holding up the nomination of Alina Habba as a U.S. Attorney.

Politico explains the situation: Alina Habba is heaping more pressure on Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) to revoke the chamber’s blue slip tradition, which New Jersey’s two Democratic senators wielded to stop her from getting a floor vote for the post of U.S. attorney in the state.

Trump had nominated Habba, whom he tapped on an interim basis in March, for the full-time appointment. But Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim used blue slips — which empower home-state senators to block U.S. attorney and District Court judge nominees — to keep her from advancing in the chamber.

And Grassley, despite pressure from the White House, isn’t planning on curtailing that power anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Tillis, also a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has said he’d serve as a check against anyone opposed by a home-state senator even if Grassley rescinded the procedure.

Habba spoke out in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.

Bartiromo announced, “On @SundayFutures with @MariaBartirom, Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba @AlinaHabba spoke about Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) upholding New Jersey Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim’s use of the blue slip process to block a hearing on Habba’s nomination.”

President Trump is not happy with Grassley.  He blasted out the following statement Sunday night:

I have a Constitutional Right to appoint Judges and U.S. Attorneys, but that RIGHT has been completely taken away from me in States that have just one Democrat United States Senator. This is because of an old and outdated “custom” known as a BLUE SLIP, that Senator Chuck Grassley, of the Great State of Iowa, refuses to overturn, even though the Democrats, including Crooked Joe Biden (Twice!), have done so on numerous occasions.

Therefore, the only candidates that I can get confirmed for these most important positions are, believe it or not, Democrats! Chuck Grassley should allow strong Republican candidates to ascend to these very vital and powerful roles, and tell the Democrats, as they often tell us, to go to HELL!

Grassley has released three statements on X Monday morning, in response to Trump’s post.

A U.S. Atty/district judge nominee without a blue slip does not have the votes to get confirmed on the Senate floor & they don’t have the votes to get out of committee. As chairman I set President Trump nominees up for SUCCESS, NOT FAILURE.

Habba was withdrawn as the President’s nominee for New Jersey U.S. Atty on July 24 & the Judiciary committee never received any of the paperwork needed for the Senate to vet her nomination.

The 100 yr old “blue slip” allows home state senators to have input on US attys & district court judges. In Biden admin Republicans kept 30 LIBERALS OFF BENCH THAT PRES TRUMP CAN NOW FILL W CONSERVATIVES.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk weighed in, writing, “Sen. Chuck Grassley is a legend for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect. But on Blue Slips he’s just wrong. In 2017 he warned that the courtesy should not be abused. Well, it’s now being abused. President Trump has a right to appoint the Judges and US Attorneys of his choosing. Democrat Senators are pursuing an unprecedented obstruction agenda. It’s time to revoke the courtesy.”
