Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived at the White House for a meeting with President Donald Trump on Thursday.
During a Q&A session with reporters in the Oval Office, one Japanese reporter asked President Trump why the United States didn’t give advance notice to Japan and other U.S. allies that they intended to launch airstrikes against Iran.
Trump quickly replied, “You don’t want to signal too much. When we go in, we went in very hard and we didn’t tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? OK, why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor? You believe in surprise, I think, much more so than us.”
He was referring to Japan’s December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, a Naval base in Hawaii, which killed 2,403 Americans and prompted the U.S. to enter World War II. The U.S. ultimately dropped atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945, but signed a peace treaty with Japan in September 1951 and the two nations have been strong allies ever since.
Trump added, “We had to surprise them and we did, and because of that surprise, we knocked out, [in] the first two days, we probably knocked out 50% of what we… and much more than we anticipated doing. So if I go and tell everybody about it, there’s no longer a surprise, right?”

Trump’s reference to Pearl Harbor – with Japan’s prime minister sitting right beside him – drew both gasps and laughter from those in the room, and has set social media abuzz.
Liberals are sputtering and fuming over Trump’s witty response to the Japanese reporter, calling it disgusting, embarrassing, and rock bottom.
“25th Amendment NOW!” one person howled.
But conservatives are loving it.
“This might actually be Trump’s funniest moment 😂,” the Daily Wire wrote.
Trump’s second eldest son, Eric Trump, commented, “One of the great responses to a reporter in history!”
🤣🤣
One of the great responses to a reporter in history!

Like him or not that was a Great answer!
I mean he ain’t wrong. Who the hell discloses surprise attacks?!
The guy just tells it like it is. You may not like his style or his approach, but you will always know exactly what he is thinking. It’s called authenticity. Something a lot of politicians have never learned.
