President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that his administration is going to check out the gold stored at Fort Knox, to make sure it’s still there.
Trump made the comments while aboard Air Force One, as he was flying back to Washington, D.C. from Florida.
Elon Musk has been calling for an audit of the gold reserves, worth an estimated $425 billion, which is stored in a fortified vault building at Fort Knox, located in Kentucky. Stored in the vault is 147.3 million ounces of gold bullion, or about half of the U.S. Treasury’s gold reserves. Gold began being stored at Fort Knox in 1937.
According to the New York Post, the vaults were totally off-limits for decades, and it’s unclear when a full audit was done of the facility. A Congressional delegation and some journalists were allowed inside in 1974, amid conspiracy claims it had been looted.
During the last Trump administration, then-Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin went to the facility in 2017 to view the vaults.
“We’re going to go to Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there,” Trump said Wednesday night. “We hope everything’s fine with Fort Knox… if the gold isn’t there, we’re going to be very upset.”

The New York Post explained: But the vault’s relevance is not what it used to be since the US left the gold standard in 1971. For about a hundred years before then, all US currency was backed by stockpiles of gold kept safe in places like Fort Knox.
But since the US left the gold standard, its holdings in Fort Knox are merely another asset held by the Federal Reserve.
On Saturday, X user ZeroHedge suggested, “It would be great if @elonmusk could take a look inside Fort Knox just to make sure the 4,580 tons of US gold is there. Last time anyone looked was 50 years ago in 1974.”
Musk asked, “Surely it’s reviewed at least every year?”

On Monday, Musk quipped, “It would be cool to do a live video walkthrough of Fort Knox!”
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) responded:
As a U.S. senator I’ve tried repeatedly to get into Fort Knox.
Fort Knox: “You can’t come to Fort Knox.”
Me: “Why?”
Fort Knox: “It’s a military installation.”
Me: “I’m a senator; I go to military bases all the time.”
Fort Knox: “You still can’t come. Because, you can’t.”

Ian Jaeger wrote, “A senator can’t enter Fort Knox to make sure the Governments gold is still there? Thats ridiculous.”
“Makes me wonder,” Sen. Lee replied.

Musk responded, “Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox? Maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not. That gold is owned by the American public! We want to know if it’s still there.”
