From the New York Post: President Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday to end the longest government shutdown in US history, hours after the House of Representatives passed legislation ending the 43-day standoff.
“It’s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again,” Trump said in the Oval Office, flanked by House Republican leaders as well as business and union leaders.
The president blasted “extremist” Democrats for shutting down the government, accusing them of attempting to “extort American taxpayers.”
“This cost the country $1.5 trillion,” Trump said of the shutdown, describing it as a “little excursion” that Democrats took “purely for political reasons.”
The House voted 222-209 Wednesday night to pass the funding bill approved by the Senate Sunday night.
Six House Democrats crossed the aisle and voted for the funding measure: Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Don Davis (D-NC), Adam Gray (D-Calif.), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY).
Two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.), voted against the Senate-passed bill.
“For the past 43 days, Democrats in Congress shut down the government of the United States in an attempt to extort American taxpayers for hundreds of billions of dollars for illegal aliens… Today, we’re sending a clear message that we will NEVER give in to extortion,” Trump declared as he signed the bill in the Oval Office late Wednesday night.

“The Democrats shutdown has inflicted massive harm. They caused 20,000 flights to be cancelled or delayed… they deprived more than 1 million government workers from their paychecks and cut off food stamp benefits of millions and millions of Americans in need. They caused tens of thousands of federal contractors and small businesses to go unpaid, and the total effect of the damage their antics caused will take weeks and months to calculate,” the president scolded.
He once again called for a termination of the filibuster “so this can never happen again.”

Trump also called for a new solution to healthcare, saying federal funding should be paid directly to the people so they can buy their own healthcare insurance and “forget this Obamacare madness.”
