While speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, DC Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump doubled down on his insistence that it will be necessary to bring in thousands of foreign workers to train Americans on how to build various products for multiple manufacturing plants being built.
The event was held at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., and came the next day after Trump welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House for meetings and a black tie dinner.
Trump touted that many new “extremely complex” plants are currently being built, to make everything from computers to telephones to missiles.
“You’re building plants to make things that are very detailed, and you have to have great knowledge,” Trump said, noting that they may open the plants have no workers qualified to work in them.
“I may take a little heat… I always take a little heat from my people… they happen to be toward the right of center, sometimes they’re way right… but if you have to bring people to get those plants open, we want you to do that,” Trump said.
“We want those people to teach our people how to make computer chips and how to make other things,” he continued.
“You can’t come in, open up a massive computer chip factory… and think you’re going to hire people off the unemployment line to run it. They’re going to have to bring thousands of people with them, and I’m going to welcome those people,” Trump said.
“Now, I love my conservative friends, I love MAGA,” Trump said, adding, “But this IS MAGA…. and those people are going to teach our people how to make computer chips… and those people are then going to go home where they probably want to be.”
“I don’t think you can open up a big plant…. with people that don’t even know what a chip looks like,” he said.
“The people that are against us are really, really smart, they’re unbelievable patriots, but they just don’t understand, our people have to be taught… this is something they’ve never done,” Trump argued.
He said he realized his comments may make his poll numbers go down, but added that his “poll numbers just went up with smart people.”
