WATCH: Trump delivers remarks at breakfast with Republican senators, pushes hard to end filibuster

President Donald Trump hosted Republican senators for a White House breakfast Wednesday morning, while Democrats are celebrating major election victories won in multiple states the night before.

The president said, “We are in the midst of a disastrous Democrat-created shutdown… that’s now officially the longest shutdown in American history. The Democrat radicals in the Senate have shown zero interest in reopening the government… they’ll take down the country if they have to.”

“Millions of Americans are going to be without SNAP benefits,” Trump also warned, adding, “Countless public servants are now not being paid and the air traffic control system is under increasing strain. We MUST get the government back open.”

Once again, Trump renewed his push for Republicans to abolish the filibuster, which is a longstanding rule in the Senate that prevents many bills from passing unless 60 senators in the 100-member chamber support it. Trump continues to warn that if Republicans don’t do it now, Democrats will eliminate the filibuster when they get control, and then there will be no stopping them.

Because of the filibuster, Republicans need at least 8 Democrats to cross the aisle and voted with Republicans to open the government. So far, only 3 Democrats have done so, and the remaining Democrats refuse to support the Continuing Resolution to open the government.

“It’s time for Republicans to do what they have to do — and that’s terminate the filibuster,” Trump said.

Trump explained that with the filibuster, Democrats will just keep the shackles on Republicans and prevent them from making any progress even with a GOP majority.

“If I thought that they weren’t going to pass the filibuster, I wouldn’t even bring it up. They’re going to pass it within the first hour… if [Democrats] take power… and it’s more likely that they take power if we don’t do it because we’re not going to be passing any legislation,” he argued.

Trump urged the Republican senators to terminate the filibuster this afternoon, and get to work.

The president continued to point out that Democrats are going to abolish the filibuster when they get in control, and then he warned, “They’re going to pack the Court. They’re going to make D.C. a state and they’re going to make Puerto Rico a state.”

Trump also noted that there are several of his nominees working in a temporary capacity because Democrats refuse to confirm them, so these good people serving in the administration will have to leave office within days or just a few weeks.
