President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump departed the White House Friday morning to travel to Rome for the funeral of Pope Frances.
The pope, 88, died Monday after suffering a stroke. His funeral will be held on Saturday in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square.
The Trumps are joining leaders and royalty from around the world who are expected to attend the service.
Trump was raised in the Presbyterian church, but now identifies as a non-denominational Christian. First Lady Melania Trump is Catholic. Her birthday is Saturday, the day of the pope’s funeral. She will be 55.
The President and First Lady walked out of the White House together Friday morning. Trump took 3 minutes to speak with reporters, then they walked together to the waiting Marine One helicopter.
As they walked, the President put his arm around his wife and appeared to be pointing out something to her on the lawn.
Stepping inside the helicopter, he is then seen briefly chatting with the pilot before taking his seat.

During the trip, President Trump walked back to the press area on Air Force One and answered more questions from reporters. Worth a watch!
Just before 6:00 pm ET, Trump announced on Truth Social, “Just landed in Rome. A good day in talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine. They are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to “finish it off.” Most of the major points are agreed to. Stop the bloodshed, NOW. We will be wherever is necessary to help facilitate the END to this cruel and senseless war!”
