Former President Jimmy Carter’s Christian faith was repeatedly extolled during his funeral on Thursday. Then, a song with anti-Christian lyrics was sang near the end of the service, which has appalled many.

From Fox News: The late former President Jimmy Carter reportedly held the 1971 John Lennon hit “Imagine” as his favorite tune. But its use as a song at his state funeral ceremony has set a firestorm on social media from critics saying it wasn’t fit for use in a memorial service in a Christian church.

On Thursday, the tune was performed by fellow Georgian Trisha Yearwood and her husband Garth Brooks during Carter’s Washington National Cathedral funeral service. One year earlier, Brooks and Yearwood performed it at former first lady Rosalynn Carter’s wake, as well. The country star couple previously worked with Carter on several Habitat for Humanity home projects, according to reports.

Social media lit up later Thursday, calling into question the performance of the song, given its lyrical rejection of religion.

The lyrics of the song promote the idea that there’s no heaven, no hell, and no countries, and suggests dreams of a global government – all extremely controversial concepts to be promoted at the funeral of a Christian man who was President of the United States.

Below are the lyrics to the song:

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Livin’ for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Livin’ life in peace

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Many social media users are reacting in shock and disgust.

Catholic Bishop Robert Barron hotly condemned the song, writing on X:

I was watching highlights from President Carter’s funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. I found some of the speeches very moving. But I was appalled when two country singers launched into a rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

Under the soaring vault of what I think is still a Christian church, they reverently intoned, “Imagine there’s no heaven; it’s easy if you try” and “imagine there’s no country; it isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.”

Vested ministers sat patiently while a hymn to atheistic humanism was sung. This was not only an insult to the memory of a devoutly believing Christian but also an indicator of the spinelessness of too much of established religion in our country.

Erick Erickson wrote, “Having Joe Biden lecture us about what a strong Christian Jimmy Carter was before the crowd sits through “Imagine” with the lyrics “Imagine there’s no heaven /It’s easy if you try” makes me question the authenticity of the assertion.”

X user Julien Stevenson wrote, “If there is no heaven, then there is no point to have a funeral. If there are no countries, there is no point in having presidents. This song is antithetical to presidents and funerals, and was played at a presidential funeral.”

“Wait a minute. They’re singing “Imagine there’s no heaven”—at a funeral?” Darrell Harrison wrote.

More comments pouring in on social media:

Imagine there’s no heaven, no religion sung at the funeral of a believer???

Crazy that this song was sung in a functioning cathedral, about a politician.

Atheist Communist nonsense thank goodness it’ll never be played at my funeral.

I was absolutely stunned they played this at a Christian man’s funeral.

Imagine no heaven? Where did Jimmy go then?

What a stupid song for a very strong believer.

Imagine there’s no God in a Church. These people are sick!

Pathetic. What a terrible song for a Christian man’s funeral.

“Imagine,” is a Globalist, Atheist, Socialist anthem. Listen to the words!

Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist also voiced her shock, writing, “WHAT? Why would ANY Christian have that sung at their funeral? Imagining there is no heaven and no Christianity at a Christian funeral is dark, indeed.”

““Imagine there’s no heaven” sung at a Christian funeral. The mind boggles,” wrote Marc Thiessen.
