On Sunday, President Donald J. Trump was filmed spreading a little joy as he attended the U.S. Open men’s final in New York.
Trump was at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch the match between Jannik Sinner of Italy and Carlos Alcaraz of Spain. While he was there, he waved to the crowd and signed hats for fans.
“The People’s President and the coolest boss ever,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote in a post on X. “Signing hats for fans at the US Open.”
Trump watched the match alongside Rolex CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour as an invited guest of the company in their suite. He was joined by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
During the match, Trump was cheered during the National Anthem but was later booed when he was shown on big screens inside.
According to ESPN, “Trump was once a US Open mainstay but hasn’t attended since he was loudly booed at a quarterfinals match in September 2015, months after launching his first presidential campaign.”
The outlet further explained, “The Trump Organization once controlled its own US Open suite, which was adjacent to the television broadcasting booth in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but suspended it in 2017, during the first year of Trump’s first term. […] Attending the tournament before he was a politician, he usually sat in the suite’s balcony during night matches and was frequently shown on the arena’s video screens.”
Before the match, Alcaraz, who won the match, said that having Trump in attendance would be a privilege and that it was “great for tennis.”
