Republicans won back the White House, gained control of the Senate, and narrowly retained control of the House in the November election. Despite all that, unity often eludes them, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ripped them to shreds Friday.
While speaking on Fox News during the House Speaker vote, Gingrich blasted the three Republicans who first went rogue and voted for other random congress members instead of supporting former House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson could only afford to lose one vote and still win back the Speakership. The three GOP holdouts were:
- Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) voted for Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.)
- Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) voted for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio)
- Rep. Keith Self (R-Tex.) voted for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.)
Later, Norman and Self changed their votes to support Johnson, which allowed him to meet the required 218 in order to win back the Speakership.
“These people are insanely destructive! What is round 2 going to be like?” Gingrich declared. “Let’s be clear, this is a stunningly stupid, suicidal strategy, which only weakens the Republican Party, weakens President Trump, makes it harder to fix America… these guys need psychologists!”
“I don’t know what they think they’re accomplishing in the real world. Except to make a spectacle out of this thing,” he continued.
“Now I hope at least two of them will switch. I think Massie is probably utterly, totally hopeless. He is sufficiently certain of his moral rights and his brilliant insights. I don’t think he will move under any circumstance. But I hope the other two will realize they’re going to look like idiots!” he added.
“This is as really literally as self-destructive as I’ve ever seen a political party be and it’s down to a handful of people. Everyone else is trying to get it to work… except for a very tiny handful,” Gingrich declared.
