Joe Biden’s attorney general Merrick Garland has now left the building.
Friday afternoon, just three days ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, Garland was given the traditional “clap-out” by employees of the Department of Justice as he stepped off the elevator, walked through the hallways and out the front door to a waiting vehicle that whisked him away.
Prior to joining the Justice Department, Garland, 72, was a judge for the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1997 to 2021. He was appointed to that role by former president Bill Clinton.
Former president Barack Obama appointed Garland to serve as a Supreme Court justice in March 2016, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. However, that was thwarted by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who refused to hold a hearing or vote on his nomination, arguing that it was too close to the next presidential election. McConnell’s decision then left the Supreme Court vacancy for President Donald Trump to fill.
Joe Biden nominated Garland to serve as U.S. Attorney General in January 2021, and he was confirmed in a 70-30 vote.
Garland has drawn the wrath of conservatives, as the DOJ and the FBI under his watch have repeatedly brought cases against Trump supporters and Trump himself. Meanwhile, he has been accused of going light on Hunter Biden.
Friday evening, the Justice Department posted a video on social media, as Garland was honored by DOJ employees with the traditional “clap-out” while walking out of the building for the last time.
