From Fox News: Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears of Virginia could make history next year as the nation’s first Black woman to win election as a governor.

She would also make history as Virginia’s first female governor.

But Sears, in an exclusive national interview with Fox News Digital, emphasized that “I’m not really running to make history. I’m just trying to, as I’ve said before, leave it better than I found it, and I want everyone to have the same opportunities I had.”

Sears, who was born in the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica and immigrated to the U.S. as a six-year-old, served in the Marines and is a former state lawmaker. She made history three years ago when she won election as Virginia’s first female lieutenant governor.

The report explains that Virginia has a unique law which prevents a governor from serving two consecutive terms. Therefore Gov. Glenn Youngkin cannot run for re-election next year.

However, Youngkin has thrown his full support behind Sears to take his place, and said he will be campaigning hard for her.

“I’m not your typical politician, and I never will be. I don’t make excuses. I’m tough, principled, and I never stop working to get things done for you. I’m running for governor to make life better for EVERY Virginian,” she wrote.

In the Virginia governor’s race, Sears will be running against Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA agent. Spanberger was elected to U.S. Congress in 2018, but decided not to run for re-election this year, saying she will run for governor of Virginia instead.
