WATCH: Mayor Adams addresses possible Trump endorsement for mayoral race against socialist Mamdani

President Trump hasn’t offered support for Mayor Adams’ re-election, and Adams says he isn’t expecting it.

While Trump praised Adams’ bid and his allies urged Curtis Sliwa to drop out to block “communist lunatic” Zohran Mamdani, Adams told The New York Post, “I have not asked him for [an endorsement or help], and he has not interfered with this race at all.”

Adams is trailing badly in recent polls, sitting over 20 points behind Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani. Still, he remains confident of a November upset, even with Sliwa and fellow independent Andrew Cuomo in the race. All three are vying for support from moderate Democrats, Republicans, and independents.

“I got to win the race based on what I do best, and that’s campaign,” said Adams during an interview on the backyard porch of Gracie Mansion.

Cuomo and Adams have both urged each other to drop out, each claiming they’re the only one who can block far-left candidate Zohran Mamdani from winning. Adams, who has aligned with Trump at times, dodged questions about wanting his endorsement, citing NYC’s 6-to-1 Democratic majority. He did question why Cuomo wasn’t criticized by the left after Trump said the ex-governor should stay in the race to stop a “communist” from taking over the city.

Additionally, Trump declined to endorse anyone, saying, “I don’t want to say.”

Adams avoided answering whether he’d accept the Republican line if it opened up. Under state law, Sliwa would need to accept a federal post, move out of NYC, or die to be removed from the ballot. If that happened, Adams would need support from three of the five GOP county chairs to take his place. Despite past friction with Trump, Sliwa says he’s fully committed to staying in the race.

Trump hasn’t contacted Adams but has repeatedly attacked Mamdani since his surprise win in the Democratic primary, calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” in a June 25 Truth Social post. Adams, often criticized by the far left for his ties to Trump, could gain support from Republicans and moderate Democrats if the president endorses him, some analysts say.
