In an interview with News Nation host Cris Cuomo over the weekend, liberal Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters of California

Waters, 86, has served in U.S. Congress for 34 years, and represents a district in the southern part of Los Angeles County, just south of the devastating wildfires that have destroyed Palisades, Eaton and other areas of the city.

Many elite, wealthy neighborhoods have been reduced to ashes, including the homes of multiple celebrities. In total, officials say over 12,000 structures have been destroyed, at at least 24 fatalities have been reported.

In her interview with Cuomo on Saturday, Waters went on a tirade against the rich people, claiming they don’t pay their fair share in taxes, which she says has resulted in a lack of resources to fight fires.

Major focus has been on Democrat officials in California, including Governor Gavin Newsom, LA Mayor Karen Bass, and LA Fire Department chief Kristin Crowley.   Also in the hot seat is $750,000-a-year LA water czar Janisse Quiñones, also a Democrat, who was just hired last May, and has not refilled an empty 117 million-gallon water reservoir.

As Cuomo raised concerns about Democrat officials, suddenly Waters didn’t want to talk politics anymore, and said, “Instead of talking about Democrats and Republicans. Get the information up on the screens” to show people where they should go for help.

Cuomo fired back, saying, “However, it can also be seen that you don’t want to talk about the politics because it’s on your party, because the mayor and the governor are Democrats who arguably should have had the people in Altadena better prepared for this. They should have the resources more available, so they don’t need me to put them up because this state has been doing the work and that they’ve been preparing the situations for wildfires like they were made aware of… instead of cutting deals with PG and E and insurance companies, they would have prepared the state. That is not unfair criticism. Is it too soon? Maybe. But the questions are real.”

Waters snapped, “Let me tell you something. I’m not in the business of protecting anybody. And I think that my work over the years that I’ve been involved, have been absolutely on point in dealing with what has to be dealt with to help the people.”

“Services cost money,” she raged, adding, “We should be willing to get the richest people in this country, the richest 1% that is protected, make sure they pay their fair taxes so that we can have the money to provide the services.”

Waters is being blasted for her comments. Filmmaker and author Justine Bateman wrote, “This is unbelievable. Maxine Waters just blamed “rich people” for the failings of @GavinNewsom and @KarenBass. She says the problem is that the rich in Pacific Palisades didn’t pay the taxes necessary to “provide the services.” The truth is that the wealthy of Los Angeles pay so much in taxes that Newsom and Bass had enough to lose billions of dollars every year due to fraud and ineptitude, and yet the state still functioned. How dare you, @RepMaxineWaters. What a repulsive and irresponsible statement.”

X user AG Hamilton wrote, “Absolutely shameful. California had the highest taxes in the country. The reason they have budget shortfalls is they have incompetent leaders with backwards priorities. It has nothing to do with people not paying their fair share.”

Derek Hunter wrote, “Maxine Waters whines that rich people in the most heavily taxed state in the country aren’t paying their “fair share” when the state spends $2.6 billion in health care for illegal aliens. Stop electing morons if you’re sick of government failing you.”
