As of noon ET on Friday, the U.S. Congress does not have a House Speaker, as lawmakers are beginning the process to vote on who will be Speaker for the next two years.

Assuming all Republicans are there to vote, Rep. Mike Johnson can only afford to lose one Republican vote and still win his bid to remain Speaker.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has emphatically declared he will not vote for Johnson. It is yet to be determined whether all other Republicans will support him.

However, no other Republican is even running for Speaker.

Below is the moment Speaker Johnson officially closed out the 118th Congress, which then allows the proceedings to begin for the Speaker election.

Ahead of the proceedings, Trump released a statement a statement in support of Johnson on Truth Social.

“Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson, a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support. A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!! – A BIG AFFIRMATION, INDEED. MAGA!” Trump wrote.

Johnson responded, “Thank you, President Trump! Today is a new day in America. Congressional Republicans must stay united to quickly deliver President Trump’s America First agenda. Let’s get it done.”
