From News Nation: President Donald Trump’s new pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., will attend his first confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
Mullin will face questions about immigration, disaster aid and his leadership plans from colleagues on the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
The department he’s been tapped to lead remains largely shut down, stuck in a stalemate since Feb. 14 over funding and policies under former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
His experience in the Senate gives him an advantage, as he has working relationships with the people now tasked with confirming him. The junior senator is expected to get the support of all Republicans and maybe some Democrats.
Mullin will appear before the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee for his confirmation hearing. It is scheduled to start at 9:30am ET.

BACKGROUND ON MARKWAYNE MULLIN
Mullin, 48, has served in the Senate since January 2023, having won the seat in a special election. He was running for re-election in the 2026 midterms. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said he will appoint someone else to fill the remainder of Mullin’s term. That individual, along with any other candidates, will have to launch a campaign for the November 2026 election.
Mullin previously served in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives from 2013-2023.
He and his wife have 6 children, including two adopted twin girls. He is a successful businessman, and a former martial arts fighter champion. In 2021, Mullin reported that his personal assets were between $31.6 million and $75.6 million.
On March 5, Mullin posted the following statement:
As a kid from Westville, it has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve the people of Oklahoma for the past thirteen years in both the House and Senate.
I am grateful to President Trump for nominating me to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the Senate and carrying out President Trump’s mission alongside the department’s many capable agencies and the thousands of patriots who keep us safe every day.
President Trump ran on restoring law and order, and he quickly delivered the most secure U.S. border in American history. I look forward to supporting @POTUS’ mission to safeguard the American people and defend the homeland.
