Former President Donald Trump is holding a campaign rally on Long Island Wednesday evening, despite that he is considered to have very little chance of winning the state, due to the massive numbers of liberal voters in New York City.
Trump’s rally is being held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, which is in Long Island’s Nassau County, a longtime Republican stronghold in the liberal state.
Fox News explains that a Republican hasn’t carried New York since President Ronald Reagan won the state as part of his landslide re-election victory in 1984.
Why is Trump holding a rally near New York City when he has almost no chance of winning the state?
Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh explained, “Quite clearly, New York is the biggest media hub in the country.” He added that “when [Trump] delivers a message there, it’s piped directly into homes in every market in every battleground state. The most valuable commodity we have is President Trump’s time. And that event is making efficient use of it.”
The rally is also a strategic move to help hold on to several congressional seats in New York which are up for re-election this year.
Massive crowds of people started lining up for the rally as early as Tuesday evening, and more started pouring in early Wednesday morning. The Nassau Coliseum has a capacity of 16,000, and thousands more are expected to be watching from monitors outside.
