President Donald Trump is holding a press conference in the Oval Office Friday afternoon, and will be joined by Elon Musk, whose allotted time to serve as leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has come to an end.
The Trump administration hired Musk as a “special government employee,” a role Congress created in 1962 that allows the executive or legislative branch to hire temporary employees for specific short-term initiatives, for “no more than 130 days in a 365-day period.” Musk’s 130-day term started on Inauguration Day, and therefore expired on May 30.
Although his role at DOGE is officially ending, President Trump has indicated that Musk will still be advising in some capacity.
Trump announced in a Truth Social post Thursday evening, “I am having a Press Conference tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. EST, with Elon Musk, at the Oval Office. This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific! See you tomorrow at the White House.”
Friday morning, Musk shared a video clip of an interview with Vice President JD Vance, who commended Musk for his efforts to help root out waste, fraud and abuse from government spending.
“I think what Elon Musk’s done is really incredible… the DOGE effort will continue… and most importantly, the job, the job of making the government more efficient — of not wasting people’s money — that has to continue. I think it’s one of the most important mandates that we got from the American people,” Vance said.

Ahead of the press conference Friday afternoon, House Speaker Mike Johnson released the following statement:
Thank you, @ElonMusk, for your selfless, patriotic service to our country. Elon and the @DOGE team dug through the bureaucracy and shined a light on MASSIVE waste, fraud, and abuse.
They have saved the American people BILLIONS of dollars, and are updating old and inefficient systems across the federal government – all while providing Republicans with a list of targets of pointless programs that Congressional action will address.
DOGE has done amazing work and will continue to deliver on the demands to make our government more efficient. The House is eager to act on its findings. Congress is working with the White House to codify DOGE savings to stop government misuse and misspending of our tax dollars.
Thank you, @ElonMusk, for your selfless, patriotic service to our country.
