From the New York Post: As Los Angeles battles its worst fire in history, fire department’s highly-paid diversity head is facing an inferno of backlash after a bizarre comment surfaced in which she appears defend DEI hiring by blaming victims.

In a video defending the department’s DEI hiring practices, Deputy Chief Kristine Larson — who heads the Equity and Human Resources Bureau — addressed accusations that female firefighters aren’t strong enough carry a man out of a burning building.

Her response: “He got himself in the wrong place if I have to carry him out of a fire.”

The video went viral on social media after the fire department was caught off-guard and ill-prepared when an outbreak of wildfires began to tear through the Pacific Palisades — one of the oldest and wealthiest neighborhoods in the city — last week.

In the video, Larson, who is a lesbian, claims, “You want to see somebody that responds to your house, your emergency… whether it’s a medical call or a fire call… that looks like you. It gives that person a little more ease, knowing that somebody might understand their situation better. ‘Is she strong enough to do this?’ Or ‘You couldn’t carry my husband out of a fire.’ Which my response is, ‘He got himself in the wrong place if I have to carry him out of a fire.’”

Larson is reportedly paid over $300,000 per year for her position within the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Her bio on the LAFD website includes the following:

She has completed a DEI certification program through Cornell University and is participating in the International Association of Fire Chief’s Diversity Executive Leadership Program which aims to advance DEI within the fire service, with a cohort of members from around the Country.

Kris is also very involved in girls’ fire camps up and down the West Coast which provide leadership, team building and empowerment to young women in high school. The two-day camps are important ways to teach young women that their lives are limitless, they can overcome their fears and be whatever they want in life.
