Joe Biden went on a tirade during a White House press briefing on Friday, making it clear he doesn’t support free speech on social media.
Biden was asked by one reporter to respond to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement this week that he is replacing the liberal third party fact checkers with a Community Notes program, similar to what X uses.
“It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression,” Zuckerberg announced.
Also, on Friday, Zuckergberg shared details in an interview with podcast host Joe Rogan, saying his company was heavily pressured by the Biden administration to censor conservative content on their platforms.
“During the Biden administration, when they were trying to roll out the vaccine program… while they were trying to push that program they also tried to censor anyone who is basically arguing against it. And they pushed us super hard to take down things that were honestly, were true. They basically pushed us and said, you know, that ‘anything saying that says vaccines might have side effects, you basically need to take down.’ And I was just like ‘We’re not going to do that, we’re clearly not going to do that, I mean that is kind of inarguably true,” Zuckerberg told Rogan.
While speaking to reporters at the White House Friday evening, Biden raged against Zuckerberg, declaring, “The whole idea of walking away from fact-checking…. I find to be just contrary to American… the way we talk about one another… telling the truth matters.”
Appearing to forget that Facebook is a social media platform for the public to voice their opinions, and not a news outlet, Biden fumed, “You think it doesn’t matter, that they let it be printed… where millions of people read it… things that are simply not true? I don’t know what that’s all about… it’s completely contrary to what America is all about. You want to tell the truth.”
Biden then seemed to even forget who he was talking about, as he said, “The idea that a billionaire can buy something and say, by the way, from this point on, we’re going to fact-check anything… and when you have millions of people going on line reading this stuff… I think it’s really shameful.”
