Fox News host Martha MacCallum could not hide her exasperation during a fiery exchange with Democrat Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware Wednesday afternoon.
The discussion was about the waste, fraud and abuse exposed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Coons claimed he doesn’t believe the reports about the level of fraud that has been discovered.
Moreover, he insisted, “There are people whose names are on the rolls as having been born 150 or 200 years ago. They’re not receiving social security payments.”
He claimed that the reason he’s opposed to Elon Musk and DOGE auditing the Social Security system is because Musk has described it as a “ponzi scheme.”
Coons continued to spew his own talking points, refusing to let MacCallum get a word in edgewise, and repeatedly talked over her when she tried.
“What have Democrats done? What did Joe Biden’s administration do to find the waste, fraud and abuse in social security to try to shore up this important agency?” MacCallum asked.
Coon snarked, “You are presuming widespread waste, fraud and abuse… you haven’t offered any credible evident to support that.” MacCallum rolled her eyes in frustration.
The debate got hotter and hotter by the minute.
MacCallum fired back, saying, “You’re saying I’m assuming there’s waste, fraud and abuse… I think it’s equally surprising that you are assuming that the government is functioning in an efficient way.”
Several more eye rolls followed as Coons continued his rant.
“I don’t know why you don’t want to hear it… You can’t just put your fingers in your ear and going ‘blah blah blah, it’s not happening!'” MacCallum told him.
She asked Coons if he actually watched Bret Baier’s entire interview with Musk and his DOGE leaders. Coons didn’t appear to even know what she was talking about.
MacCallum took one final shot at Coons in a ‘grand finale’ moment.
“I never heard anyone say during the entire Biden administration that they wanted to change the system or make it slimmer or more efficient or get rid of the waste,” she fumed.
“There were proposals,” he stammered.
“There were proposals… that’s comforting,” she mocked.
“I’ve gotta go… .but I’m going to find out how many people are over the age of 120 who are getting checks,” she declared, adding, “You would obviously think that would be a waste, correct?”
“If they’re alive and entitled to checks, they should be getting them,” Coons brazenly claimed of the potential 120-year-olds.
“If they’re alive… let’s check on them and see if they’re alive,” she mocked.
