FROM DAILY MAIL: The Brazilian mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew was filmed being boxed in by five Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) SUVs before being carted off to custody.
Bruna Ferreira was nabbed by officers on November 12 while attempting to leave her condo in Revere, Massachusetts, to pick up her son Michael, 11, from school.
Footage has since emerged of the swoop, with Ferreira’s silver Honda Civic being blocked into a parking lot by five unmarked vehicles.
Five agents, all of whom appear to be in plainclothes, were then seen leaving their vehicles and slapping the Brazilian in cuffs before leading her away.
Ferreira has since been housed at an ICE Processing Center in Louisiana.
Her son, Michael Jr, is Leavitt’s nephew. His father, Michael, is Leavitt’s brother. The boy lives with his father and stepmother, Kara Leavitt, in New Hampshire.
Michael confirmed the arrest in a statement, telling WBUR that his “only concern has always been the safety, well-being, and privacy of [his] son.”
Ferreira’s lawyer Todd Pomerlau, explained that Ferreira arrived in the US from Brazil as a child in 1998 and is protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. She was also in the process of getting her residency.
In comments to TMZ, Pomerlau said, “I have just been shown a video of my client, Bruna Ferreira, documenting her unlawful arrest by officials who appear to be from ICE. But it is hard to tell because they have masks over their faces and are in unmarked vehicles. No warrant is shown. Common tactics these days.
“This is targeted, unconstitutional depravity. A single mother who owns two businesses and was merely awaiting her green card, like tens of thousands of others, now sits in a for-profit prison in Louisiana, stripped from her child right before the holidays.
“Bruna had no problem whatsoever with the Leavitt family. Karoline is her son’s godmother, chosen over her own sister, and Michael Sr is a very good father.
“Bruna was en route to pick up her son Michael Jr after school like she did several days a week. He lived with her till kindergarten, but now awaits for his mother’s warm embrace. This is appalling. We look forward to her day in court.”
But the Department of Homeland Security said Ferreira is a “criminal illegal alien” and that she “has a previous arrest for battery.”
According to the department’s spokesman, “She entered the US on a B2 tourist visa that required her to depart the US by June 6, 1999. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, all individuals unlawfully present in the United States are subject to deportation.”
