Progressive Democrats are piling on the pressure for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to pass the torch, and are now suggest potential contenders to replace him.
From The Hill: Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) on Sunday floated possible candidates to replace Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in his role as Senate minority leader shortly after Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) criticized “freelance” opinions from the lower chamber.
“Chris Murphy is a top leader. Cory Booker is a dynamic leader. Brian Schatz is a dynamic leader. I mean, Elizabeth Warren is someone whose ideology I appreciate. There are a lot of great talent,” Khanna told NBC News’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.”
“And really? When you think about it, just from a common sense test, do you think Democrats around the country think that Chuck Schumer should be the face of the future of the Democratic Party?” the California Democrat said, reflecting recent progressive frustration with the New York Democrat.
Khanna last week urged Senate Democrats to replace Schumer as leader in the wake of eight members of the Senate Democratic caucus voting to start the process of ending the government shutdown.
Blasting Schumer, Khanna said, “He doesn’t inspire confidence, he’s not bold, he’s out of touch with the grass roots… this was the final straw.”
