CNN’s Van Jones, a former Obama adviser, admitted at an event last week that President-elect Donald Trump won the election because Democrats got everything all wrong – from miscalculating how to reach people, to chasing away prominent figures within their own party.
Jones was part of a bipartisan panel of political figures at the New York Times DealBook summit on December 4, as they were discussing why the Harris campaign failed, and how the Trump campaign skyrocketed to victory.
In his remarks, Jones admitted that Democrats failed to realize that the public is no longer getting their news from mainstream media, and said there’s another entire digital world out there that Democrats failed to tap into, but Trump did.
Van Jones: “The mainstream has become fringe and the fringe has become mainstream. There are platforms, there are people out there that are getting 14 million streams and we’re on cable news getting 1-2 million.”
“Donald Trump understood that and we didn’t.”

Jones also pointed out that prominent figures such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Elon Musk and Joe Rogan were once on their side, and he slammed Democrats for turning them away and letting them flip to the Republican side.
“I hope the party takes a chance to look at the fact that we pushed all our rebels out of this party. We had a rebellion in our party in 2016; it was called Bernie Sanders. You had a rebellion in your party in 2016; it was called Donald Trump,” Jones said, looking toward the Republicans on the panel.
“Your rebel won. Our rebel lost. And then since then, the rebels in our party have been pushed out. RFK was a rebel inside of our party. He wanted to run against Joe Biden fair and square, the DNC wouldn’t let him — pushed him out,” he continued.
“You can walk down the list. Don’t forget Elon Musk was a [former Democratic presidential candidate] Andrew Yang Democrat four years ago. He’s out. You can walk down a list. Joe Rogan was very favorable toward Michelle Obama. He was a Bernie guy. He’s out,” Jones continued. “So there’s something that’s happened in this party where the rebels in this party no longer feel like they have a place, and we’ve got to be able to talk about that stuff honestly.”

In early October, a CNN panel admitted Democrats really messed up by pushing Elon Musk away.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.,) said, “I think where the Democrats started to lose Elon was actually personal. We should have celebrated his contributions to electric vehicles, even though he was against unionization.
“We should have said, look, Starlink great product, that that needs to be used. We should celebrate the fact that he’s had the first commercial success of private people in space. I think a lot of it was we didn’t celebrate it and he felt offended,” he added.
Contributor Kara Swisher said, “I got a call from him about it when he wasn’t invited to that EV summit, he should have been invited. I called the White House. I never called the White House. And I’m like, why didn’t you invite him? He’s very angry.”
