From the New York Post: An accused California shoplifter was stunned to learn she might be slapped with a felony charge after “new laws” that crack down on low-level theft, police video shows.
The Seal Beach Police Department in Orange County published a montage of security, dash and body camera videos that show three women allegedly lifting more than $600 in merch from an Ulta Beauty before officers caught up with the gals, slapped them in cuffs and shoved them into a squad car.
That was when one suspect asks if they could be charged with a felony, to which her accomplice delivers the sobering news: “B—h, new laws. Stealing is a felony.”
“This is Orange County, b—h. They don’t play,” lamented the alleged thief.
The new laws in question are Proposition 36 — a ballot initiative that went into effect Wednesday undoing soft-on-crime policies limiting law enforcement’s ability to crack down on lesser crimes like shoplifting.
The report explains that since 2014, thieves could steal up to $950 worth of merchandise and only be hit with a misdemeanor.
However, citizens and business owners are fed up, and in November a new law called Proposition 36, or the “Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act,” passed by a whopping 69 percent. It went into effect on December 18.
Proposition 36 increases punishments for some retail theft and drug possession offenses, especially for repeat offenders.
The Seal Beach Police Department posted the video on Instagram and wrote:
“B*tch, New Laws.”
One of mother’s favorite songs and a friendly reminder that Proposition 36, which increases punishments for some retail theft and drug possession offenses, went into effect Wednesday morning in California.
It undoes some of the changes voters made with a 2014 ballot measure that turned certain nonviolent felonies into misdemeanors, effectively shortening prison sentences and leading to a spike in retail theft and crime.
Here in Seal Beach we never believed in the cite and release program, but this new proposition only strengthens our commitment to combatting Organized Retail Theft.
Remember folks, Don’t Steal in Seal 🦭🍊
