While speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Joe Biden made a wild and completely false claim about the numbers of illegal aliens crossing the border into the United States during his term in office.
“Look, let’s get something in mind about the border. When I became president, the numbers came way down!” Biden claimed.
He then rambled, “Number two… we had a circumstance where I pushed very hard for a bipartisan agreement to put more people on the border… more… more… more Secret Service agents… and guess what, he’s on the phone saying ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it…’ make me look bad.”
NOTE: Secret Service agents don’t work at the border.

FACT CHECK: When Joe Biden got into office, he halted all construction on the border wall, and reversed Trump’s border policies, which resulted in a massive, record-breaking invasion at the southern border.
Below are the numbers on apprehensions at the southern border for each fiscal year during both the Trump and the Biden administrations:
Trump Administration
- FY 2017 – 415,517
- FY 2018 – 521,090
- FY 2019 – 977,509
- FY 2020 – 458,088
Biden Administration
- FY 2021 – 1,734,686
- FY 2022 – 2,378,944
- FY 2023 – 2,478,669
- FY 2024 – 2,135,005
But Biden falsely claimed Monday, “When I became president, the numbers came way down!”
Fox news reporter Bill Melugin pounced on the brazen comment, writing, “A stunning, bold-faced lie. I’m having trouble picking my jaw up off the floor that he would make such a claim. Unbelievable.”

Below is a screenshot of data from Customs and Border Protection, which shows the last two fiscal years of the Trump administration, and the first two years of the Biden administration:
The New York Times published a report last Friday, Jan. 10, and noted that since Trump won the presidential election, the number of illegal crossings at the border have started to plummet.
“Illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border have slowed significantly as President Biden prepares to leave office and as President-elect Donald J. Trump, who promised to crack down on immigration, is days away from retaking power,” the Times wrote.
