From CEO Today: Tom Cruise, a global cinematic icon, has once again proven that his influence extends beyond Hollywood. The acclaimed actor has been awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award, the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to showcasing the Navy and Marine Corps through his groundbreaking films. This achievement solidifies Cruise’s legacy not only as a Hollywood legend but also as a cultural ambassador for the military.

On Tuesday, Cruise was honored during a ceremony at Longcross Studios in the United Kingdom, where he is currently immersed in filming. The award, presented by U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, underscores Cruise’s dedication to authentically portraying the lives of servicemen and women on screen.

The Navy lauded Cruise for bringing global awareness to the sacrifices and skills of its personnel, highlighting how films like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick have inspired admiration for the military’s values of courage, discipline, and innovation.

The report explains that when the original Top Gun film was released in 1986, it was more than just a box office hit, but it also had a huge impact on military recruitment, and Navy recruiters even set up booths outside theaters.

“The film showcased the Navy’s state-of-the-art technology, rigorous training, and camaraderie, appealing to a generation eager to embrace its adventurous spirit,” CEO Today wrote.

The 2022 Top Gun sequel also introduced young audiences to the opportunities available with the U.S. Navy, and further cemented the story’s appeal.

In addition to the two Top Gun films, Cruise has also starred in other military-themed movies, including:

  • Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
  • A Few Good Men (1992)
  • Mission: Impossible Franchise (1996–Present)

“I admire all of the servicemen and women,” Cruise said while accepting the award Tuesday. “I know in life, something that is very true to me is ‘to lead is to serve.,'” he added.

“This principle resonates deeply with me, and I see it embodied in the courage and commitment of our servicemen and women. I am humbled and grateful for this extraordinary acknowledgment,” Cruise said.
