WATCH: 60 Minutes’ holds Harris’ feet to fire over ‘mistake’ that triggered ‘flood’ of illegal aliens

From Fox News: Vice President Kamala Harris was pressed by CBS News’ Bill Whitaker about whether it was a “mistake” for the Biden administration to go soft on its border policies during a tense exchange on Monday’s special election episode of “60 Minutes.”

“You recently visited the southern border and embraced President Biden’s recent crackdown on asylum seekers, and that crackdown produced an almost immediate and dramatic decrease in the number of border crossings,” Whitaker said. “If that’s the right answer now, why didn’t your administration take those steps in 2021?”

“The first bill we proposed to Congress was to fix our broken immigration system, knowing that if you want to actually fix it, we need Congress to act. It was not taken up,” Harris responded. “Fast forward to a moment when a bipartisan group of members of the United States Senate, including one of the most conservative members of the United States Senate, got together, came up with a border security bill.”

Blaming it all on Trump, Harris continued, “Well, guess what happened? Donald Trump got word that this bill was afoot and could be passed, and he wants to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. So he told his buddies in Congress, ‘Kill the bill, don’t let it move forward.'”

Whitaker pushed back, telling her, “I’ve been covering the border for years, and so I know this is not a problem that started with your administration. But there was an historic flood of undocumented immigrants coming across the border the first three years of your administration. As a matter of fact, arrivals quadrupled from the last year of President Trump.”

“Was it a mistake to loosen the immigration policies as much as you did?” he asked her.

Defiantly, Harris claimed, “It’s a long-standing problem, and solutions are at hand, and from day one, literally, we have been offering solutions.”

He again asked if it was a mistake to allow a “flood” to happen at the border, but she insisted, “I think the policies that we have been proposing are about fixing a problem, not promoting a problem, okay.”

Whitaker continued to push back on Harris, and she continued to dodge.

The Trump campaign and other conservatives are pounding Harris over her response.

The Trump War Room wrote, “Kamala Harris is asked THREE TIMES if it was a mistake to allow millions of illegal aliens to cross our southern border. Every single time she deflects, shifts blame, and claims she took steps to fix the problem. Get ready to be gaslit like never before.”

Trump campaign advisor Tim Murtaugh wrote, “It’s hard to believe that a candidate for president is overmatched this much by the moment. Confronted with the reality that illegal border crossings QUADRUPLED on her watch, Harris simply does not know what to do. You can see it in her eyes.”

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin unloaded on Harris. He wrote:

60 Minutes repeatedly asks Harris why the Biden/Harris admin waited 3 years to take executive action to curb illegal crossings. She says they introduced a bill upon taking office (that bill would’ve given given an 8 year path to amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants) then pivots to saying Trump killed the bipartisan border deal – which, again, the admin did not attempt until after 3 years of record setting chaos. Harris never actually answers the question as to why they waited 3 years to attempt to stop the chaos at the executive level.

And a reminder about those record setting numbers, they do not include the more than 1.9 million known gotaways who were recorded entering the U.S. without apprehension. Gotaways under Biden/Harris in 3 years were higher than the prior decade of Trump + Obama – combined and there were times when entire chunks of the border were left completely unmanned to focus resources on processing/mass catch & release instead. There were days in 2022 & 2023 when 2,000+ gotaways were being recorded by CBP every day – while at the same time, the admin was falsely claiming the border was “closed” and “secure”.

Elon Musk replied, “The Biden/Harris administration openly bragged about opening the border and stopping wall construction.”
