From Daily Mail:
A new study found people who regularly drink sugar-free sodas them have more than double the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to the average person.
High-sugar drinks like soda and fruit juices have long been linked to the condition, but now researchers are warning artificial sweeteners may also cause problems.
The researchers found people who consumed drinks high in saccharin – a common zero-calorie artificial sweetener found in Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi – were at the highest risk.
While the FDA approved saccharin in 1977, researchers now believe it may confuse the body, signaling the brain for insulin after detecting sweetness.
Since the body has no sugar to process, insulin regulation becomes disrupted over time, potentially causing insulin resistance.
Study author Lyn Steffen, an epidemiology professor at the University of Minnesota, recommends “limiting the use of any sweetener” and swapping sugared beverages for “unsweetened water, coffee, tea, milk or a small amount of 100 percent fruit juice.”
A new study links frequent diet drink intake to a higher risk of developing diabetes. Those who drank the most diet soda had a 129% greater risk of getting diabetes. High saccharin intake was linked to a 110% increased risk of developing diabetes.#research pic.twitter.com/Yz1Eyvd3x5
