President-elect Donald Trump stated during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday that he is considering pardoning New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted in September on federal corruption charges.
The indictment alleges Adams exchanged favors for Turkey in return for campaign donations, which were used to secure matching campaign funds, and received benefits like hotel upgrades. Adams has denied the charges, which some legal experts have called flimsy and potentially politically motivated.
Trump suggested Adams was treated unfairly after opposing President Biden’s border policy, which brought an influx of migrants to New York City. When asked if he would consider pardoning Adams, Trump responded, “Yeah, I would.”
Last week, Adams met with Tom Homan, President-elect Trump’s pick to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection, signaling a willingness to work with Trump on the U.S. migration crisis.
