From the Washington Examiner: Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra launched his bid to become the next governor of California. He was previously the state’s attorney general.
Becerra could face former Vice President Kamala Harris to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Harris said she would make an announcement this summer on whether she plans to run for governor of California. Becerra’s campaign said he would not exit the race should Harris enter.
“California is at a crossroads. From housing to healthcare, childcare to college, working families are facing an affordability crisis. The California Dream is slipping away. I’m running for Governor to fight for that dream, to build a stronger, affordable California for everyone, and to take on bullies who get in our way,” Becerra said in a statement announcing his run.
A career politician, Becerra, 67, has been in politics for over 30 years. He first served in the U.S.House of Representatives from 1993 through 2017, and was chairman of the House Democratic Caucus from 2013-2017. He was Attorney General of California from January 2017 until March 2021, and then served as HHS Secretary during the Biden administration.
During his time as California attorney general, Becerra filed over 100 lawsuits against the first Trump administration, including defending the DACA program, and trying to stop Trump from building a wall at the southern border.
Becerra bragged about his lawsuits against Trump in his campaign announcement.
I’m running to be the next Governor of California.
As AG I took on Trump – and won. As HHS Secretary, I took on Big Pharma – and won. It’s time to do it again for California. Let’s rebuild the California Dream for everyone.
