From Fox News: Pepperdine University continues to be impacted by the Franklin Fire in Los Angeles County, Calif., early Tuesday morning, and a shelter-in-place remains in effect “until at least daylight,” the university said.
Pepperdine’s updates have been coming across the university’s Facebook and X pages since just before 1 a.m. local time. Daylight is expected to be just before 7 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
The fire has now spread to cover over 1,800 acres, and is 0 percent contained, after just starting Monday night at 10:50 p.m.
The university first announced before dawn:
The University understands the worst of the fire has pushed past Pepperdine. However, there are smaller spot fires on campus that are not threatening life or structures, and fire resources remain on campus to address these spot fires as they occur.
Additionally, power remains out for much of Malibu and therefore, to ensure the safety of our community, we will maintain the shelter-in-place protocol until at least daylight. The EOC will continue to update the community.
In a follow-up post, the university announced that the campus is now considered safe.
The Pepperdine community continues to safely shelter in place in the Tyler Campus Center and Payson Library, and Bon Appétit is preparing breakfast to be served shortly at both locations. The Franklin Fire is now 1,800 acres and threatening structures in other areas of Malibu. Power remains out across much of campus and Malibu, and is expected to remain out for the foreseeable future.
As previously noted, final exams scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed. An updated final exam schedule will be released later today by the Dean’s office of each school.

At 7:40 am PT, Pepperdine University released a new update:
After assessing campus conditions at daybreak, the EOC is lifting the shelter-in-place protocol. Campus conditions are safe for members of the community to return to student residences and on-campus homes. The community is strongly encouraged to remain on campus and stay off Malibu roads as first responders continue to respond to the Franklin fire, which continues to threaten Malibu.
Additionally, be aware of ongoing fire suppression efforts on campus, and limit driving on campus to allow first responders easy access to spot fires which continue to flare up around campus.
Power remains out for much of the campus and Malibu area – avoid using elevators. The red flag warning continues as gusty winds remain. If conditions worsen, we may have to reinstitute our shelter in place protocols.
