From the New York Post: California taxpayers have been footing the bill for Kamala Harris’ security team as she tours the nation promoting her book.
Since September, dozens of California Highway Patrol officers have been by the former vice president’s and the will continue to shadow her throughout her tour, KCRA reported.
State officials have remain tight-lipped about the number of officers assigned to Harris and the total amount of taxpayer dollars spent on her security.
“All I know is it’s a lot, it is a significant amount of money,” Tom Lackey, Republican and retired California Highway Patrol officer, told KCRA.
Former vice presidents usually receive federal protection for six months after leaving office. President Joe Biden extended that protection through July 2026 at Harris’ request, before the Trump administration canceled it. The White House ultimately decided to extend Harris’ protection through September 2025.
After losing the 2024 election to President Donald Trump, Harris wrote a book titled, “107 Days,” about her short-lived presidential campaign. She launched a tour in September to promote her book, traveling to Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Portland, Nashville and Miami, and even Toronto and London.
She has extended her tour, planning to hit 18 more cities in 2026.
Harris claims she hasn’t decided yet whether to run for president again in 2028.
But instead of paying for her own security protection, California taxpayers are now having to pick up the tab. KCRA3 said state officials will not say exactly how many officers are assigned to her, how long the arrangement will last or how much taxpayer money is being spent.
State Democrats claim California law allows the money to be spent on Harris’ protection, because she once served as the state’s attorney general – which was nearly 10 years ago. She was California AG from Jan. 2011 to January 2017.

Reactions are pour in, both in comments on the about YouTube video, and on X. The vast majority of those commenting are voicing their fury and outrage over the money being spent for Harris’ protection.
“She just bought an 8 million dollar home!!! Ocean front in Malibu!” one X user wrote.
Indeed, she did. The New York Post reported in January, “Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, quietly dropped $8.15 million last month on the gated mansion in Point Dume, one of Malibu’s most exclusive coastal enclaves.”
