From the New York Post: Nearly 200 New York firefighters are battling a massive five-alarm blaze at a Bronx apartment building Friday morning that has left at least seven people injured.

The FDNY responded to the huge blaze at a six-story residential building at 2910 Wallace Ave. in the East Bronx around 1:40 a.m., fire officials said — with alarming video showing the building engulfed with flames billowing from the roof.

Within an hour, “heavy wind conditions” elevated the fire to five alarms — the highest alarm level indicating a severe fire, according to the FDNY.

The FDNY shared video footage of the massive fire, and fire announced, “Since 1:40 a.m. Friday morning, the FDNY has been operating at the scene of a 5-alarm fire at 2910 Wallace Avenue in the Bronx. There are currently seven injuries. Firefighters have been battling a heavy wind condition that advanced the fire.”

Sharing another video, the FDNY confirmed, “Approximately 200 Fire and EMS personnel are operating at the scene of the 5-alarm fire on Wallace Avenue in the Bronx.”

In an update later Friday morning, the FDNY wrote:

Early Friday, the FDNY responded to reports of a fire at 2910 Wallace Avenue in the Bronx.

We arrived here a little after 1:45 this morning. We found fire in the ceiling above the top floor, between the ceiling and the underside of the roof that’s called the cockloft. It’s an open area for the entire length and width of the building. This building is about 200 feet wide, about 100 feet deep, and we had fire throughout that cockloft. Heavy fire destroyed the all the apartments on the top floor and burnt through the roof.

Initially, we had fire companies inside conducting searches, removing people and attempting to fight the fire. The fire had too much headway. It was extremely dangerous for our firefighters. We removed them from the building, and we’re using tower ladders to extinguish the rest of the building, and we’re continuing with that operation.

“We had no water problems due to the cold. The wind did play a part in spreading the fire through the cockloft,” said Chief of Department John Esposito.

“There are seven minor injuries, five to firefighters and two to civilians. FDNY Fire Marshals are on scene investigating the cause.
