From Politico: Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said Friday she was pepper-sprayed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during a raid near a restaurant in Tucson.
“I was here … and was sprayed in the face by a very aggressive agent, pushed around by others, when I literally was not being aggressive, I was asking for clarification, which is my right as a member of Congress,” Grijalva said in a video posted to her social media account.
Grijalva said she identified herself as a member of Congress and described the agents at the scene — with the exception of one — as “being rude and disrespectful.” She said members of her staff and the media were also pepper-sprayed and that two people were arrested at the raid.
ICE just conducted a raid by Taco Giro in Tucson – a small mom-and-pop restaurant that has served our community for years.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin pushed back on the congresswoman’s claims, saying Grijalva was merely “in the vicinity of someone who *was* pepper sprayed as they were obstructing and assaulting law enforcement.”
“Presenting one’s self as a ‘Member of Congress’ doesn’t give you the right to obstruct law enforcement,” McLaughlin wrote.
McLaughlin also revealed that two law enforcement officers were seriously injured during the raid.
If her claims were true, this would be a medical marvel.
But they’re not true. She wasn’t pepper sprayed.
She was in the vicinity of someone who *was* pepper sprayed as they were obstructing and assaulting law enforcement. In fact, 2 law enforcement officers were seriously… https://t.co/U0zspIuGxQ

Meanwhile, Grijalva’s description of events has been panned by some who felt she wasn’t being honest.
Grijalva said she had been at the site to get lunch for herself with her staff. Several X users doubted that she just happened to be in the area. One wrote, “What a coincidence you were there at the same time as an ICE raid.”

Another questioned her description of the restaurant as a “mom and pop” as it is actually a chain of stores.
“Lying sack of shit. Taco Giro is hardly a ‘small mom & pop business’. Ten locations in Tucson alone. Give it a rest,” wrote a user.

Some also pointed out that Grijalva had not actually been pepper-sprayed.
Journalist Nick Sortor wrote, “You really think the American people are stupid, don’t you?
Luckily I saved the FULL video of you LYING about being pepper-sprayed.”

Luckily I saved the FULL video of you LYING about being pepper sprayed — even though you “conveniently” trimmed that section out of your post https://t.co/3c2TuW3XxK

Eric Daugherty also called Grijalva out for the pepper-spray claim.
“Democrat Rep. Adelita Grijalva just got caught joining an anti-ICE RIOT and LYING that she was “pepper sprayed” by agents.”

Another said she was “pathetic” for pulling the victim card.
Lmao you’ve been in congress for 12 Minutes and already you’re playing a victim.
How pathetic.

Many were angry that she was interfering with law enforcement efforts.
“Interfering with federal law enforcement is a crime!!! You should have been arrested, being a member of congress doesn’t give you a free pass to break the law,” one wrote.

“She needs to be censured and stripped of all committees, now.”
🚨 WTF?! Dem. Rep Adelita Grijalva just posted herself OBSTRUCTING federal immigration agents in Arizona
She joined a RIOT of leftists.
She needs to be censured and stripped of all committees, now. Grijalva was only sworn into office a couple of weeks ago! https://t.co/JNApwxA88l pic.twitter.com/eCKHfm7Fzi

The Tucson Police Department issued a statement about the incident. KVOA reports:
The Tucson Police Department released a statement regarding a federal search warrant at a local Tucson restaurant on the westside.
According to TPD, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) served a search warrant at Taco Giro on North Grande Avenue near St. Mary’s Road, and after deploying chemical munitions, federal agents requested assistance from TPD to safely exit the area.
TPD’s Rapid Response Team responded, temporarily restricting traffic on Grande Avenue to assist an exit for the federal agents. The roadway was reopened shortly after, and TPD personnel cleared the scene.
All Tucson Police officers were in full dark blue patrol uniforms, and no detentions, arrests, force, or munitions were used by local law enforcement, TPD said.
The department emphasized its commitment to public safety and the protection of peaceful rights. Community members with concerns about the incident are encouraged to contact the local Homeland Security Investigations office at [email protected].
ICE had previously stated agents were executing 16 search warrants in Southern Arizona.
