From Fox News: From one blue-state parent to another, activists in California are warning Illinois families about a bill advancing through their state legislature that would create more regulations, and penalties, for homeschooling parents. It’s the latest high-profile battle dealing with school choice, a campaign issue President Donald Trump ran on.

“Illinois, California, Colorado, they all compete with each other. They’re coming after homeschooling, just like they’ve been coming after public schools,” California parents rights activist Sonja Shaw said in a video posted to X on Wednesday. “They’re attacking families, stripping parental rights, and pushing their radical agendas while our kids are failing at reading, writing and math.”

At issue is HB2827, the Homeschool Act, which would charge parents with a misdemeanor if they fail to register their kids in a “homeschool declaration form” to the nearest public school they would otherwise be attending. Failure to do so would be considered truancy, and parents could face up to 30 days in jail with fines.

The bill passed a major hurdle passing out of the Democrat-dominated House education committee in a party-line vote on Wednesday, despite having upward of 50,000 witness slips in opposition and only 1,000 in support, including the Illinois State Board of Education.

The report notes that in 2018, California parents fought back against a similar bill which would have required all homeschooling families in the state to be subject to home inspections. The bill failed due to the massive backlash.

The Illinois bill reportedly requires parents to hand over teaching materials if its suspected the child isn’t being educated properly. Democrats claim this will “strengthen oversight of homeschooling.”

The bill was introduced by Illinois state Rep. Terra Costa Howard, a Democrat.

Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany announced Wednesday morning, “Parents in Illinois are protesting a bill that would require homeschool parents to REGISTER their children and could potentially require submitting teaching materials to authorities. What if you are a parent that teaches Creation? What if you are a parent that teaches life begins at conception? Do you trust the state of Illinois to use this newfound power responsibly?”

California parents rights activist Sonja Shaw is sounding the alarm, and warning that homeschool is now under attack across the nation. She wrote:

PARENTS, WAKE UP! They are coming for homeschooling just like they came for public schools, and if you don’t get involved NOW, it’ll be too late. This is how they operate—incremental control, one bill at a time, while people stay distracted. They have the majority, they are NOT scared, and they will stop at NOTHING to take away your rights.

Look at who’s in office. Look at who’s making these decisions. They don’t care about your kids, they care about CONTROL. They are RELENTLESS, and we need to be just as relentless in fighting back.

Enough is ENOUGH. Get loud, get active, and hold these people accountable before they take away everything!

Shaw then released an alarming video message and wrote, “Enough already!! They’re Already Attacking Public Schools – Now They’re Coming for Homeschoolers! Parents, Wake Up and Fight Back Against This Radical Agenda!”

School choice activist Corey A. DeAngelis has also sounded the alarm in a series of posts on X:

BREAKING: A bill attacking homeschool families passed the Illinois House Education Committee. The vote was 8 to 4. About 42,000 people signed up in OPPOSITION to the bill. The Democrats didn’t care. They think they own your kids. Wake up, parents. Throw them out of office.

Here is the Illinois House Education Committee. It is stacked with Democrats. The bill to regulate homeschooling has 16 cosponsors, all Democrats.

Nearly 42,000 people signed up AGAINST the bill to increase homeschool regulations in Illinois. That’s 42 times the number of people registering in favor. About 98% registered AGAINST the bill. The Democrats passed it anyway.

Here’s the 8 to 4 vote. It now goes to the House floor.

Here are the 16 Democrat cosponsors on the bill.
